Objectives and Results of Genetic Studies for 2008 - Updated 7-9-2008
A major long term objective is to establish pure single mutant lines. The other major objective is to continue studies of the tangerine and tangerine modifier gene.
Pair One
Tangerine Pearled Minimal Cock (17) X Tangerine Pearled Minimal Hen (1666)
D+dB +pi +ry TaTa M+ D+ +pi +ry TaTa M+
Objective: To produce tangerine with white neck ring and white flights. This is a father/daughter pair. Also, a test to determine if the male is rosy tangerine (if so, half of offspring will be rosy tangerine).
Results through June 30, 2008
This pair has produced eight offspring since August of 2007

A 1-2-1 ratio would be expected at the modifier locus if both parents are M+ at that locus. These results show both the male and female parents to be M+ at the modifier locus. Also, they show both parents to be heterozygous rosy.
Pair Two
Pearl Pied Cock (1643) X Tangerine Pearled Hen (1783)
D+D+ pipi ?ry TaTa M+ D+ ?pi TaTa M+
Objective: To test for pied in the hen (the vivid rusty red color may indicate the hen carries pied). Also testing modifier gene. This is a sibling pair. The hen is a true tangerine and the male may carry rosy. Offspring will be true tangerine.
Results through June 30, 2008
This healthy hen was found dead on the floor of the cage on 02/24/2008. I attribute death to night fright and broken neck from hitting the top of the cage. Results are limited to one clutch. This is quite a disappointment because some offspring from this pair would be true tangerine.
Band # Hatch Date Genotype Color Description
1921 30-Dec-07 D+? +ry TaTa ++ Solid Tangerine
1922 31-Dec-07 D+? ?ry TaTa M+ Tangerine Pearled (3)
These results indicate that the male is heterozygous rosy. The hen was a true tangerine. From these results one can reach no conclusions on the genotype of the male at the Modifier locus. The Solid Tangerine is a solid colored tangerine with white flights and white neckring with rosy breast, neck and head. There is a slight tangerine suffusion on the rosy head. This is indicative of heterozygous rosy in tangerine birds. The tangerine pearled offspring as of now shows no presence of rosy and may be a true tangerine.
Pair Three
Roan Cock (1650) X Show Ivory Hen (1679)
D+dw ?iv ryry Fr+ dB ?al iviv +ry
Objective: To test for Ivory in the male. I will want 10-12 offspring with no evidence of ivory offspring to be sure the male does not carry ivory. If he does not carry ivory I will use him to establish a pure rosy and roan line since the only hidden gene is white.

Pair Five
Tangerine Cock (1794) X Tangerine (Pearled) Hen (1903)
D+D+ ?pi ryry TaTa ++ D+ ?al +iv +pi ?ry Ta+ MM
Objective: This hen is a pearled heterozygous tangerine. This means that she is homozygous at the modifier locus. Paired to this male carrying no modifier genes all offspring should be M+. That means that all homozygous tangerine will be pearled and no pearled heterozygous tangerine should be produced. Because the hen carries pied hidden this will also test for pied in the male. Should rosy tangerine be produced I will know that the hen also carries rosy.

The cock obviously carries rosy hidden and is not a pure Show Ivory. I will keep the pair together because of the production of the unidentifiable offspring to see if I can produce another or determine the color of 1281. This pair should only produce either blond or peach offspring.
Pair Eight

D+dB ?al +pi +ry Ta+ ?M ?cr D+ +cr
Objective: The cock has a grey rump. The hen is the maternal grandmother of the cock. It is expected that the grey rump comes through the crested parent of the hen. This is a test to produce more grey rumped offspring.

dBdw ?al +iv ?pi ry?ry Ta+ ?M D+ ?ry Fr+ Ta+ ?M
Objective: To test the hen for rosy (the cock carries rosy and possibly homozygous rosy). Should hen carry rosy some rosy tangerine will be produced and also the possibility for roan. Should hen not carry rosy, then it is a pure ash (no hidden genes).

Pair Eleven
Ash Cock (1784) X Blond Tufted Hen (NBD)
D+//D+ ?iv ?pi +ry Fr+ Ta+ dB +ry Tf+
Objective: To produce large offspring and test inheritability of body weight. The cock weighed 200 grams at 3 months of age and the hen weighed 195 grams. Also, both the hen and cock carry rosy, so this will allow the production of some rosy tangerine offspring and some homozygous rosy ash offspring. This should allow observation of color differences between ash and rosy ash.
